May 2009 Bring More RPGs for the PS3
I’m currently playing Disgaea 3 for the PS3. It’s the only RPG I’ve played on the PS3. I downloaded the demos for Eternal Sonata and Valkyria Chronicles, but they just didn’t do it for me. So while I’m working on this one freelancing project that is going to be the death of me, my mind wandered about what PS3 game I’m going to play next after Disgaea 3. I don’t have any others, and Final Fantasy XIII won’t be out for another year. *sob* So I diverted from my writing project to look at the RPGs in the PlayStation 3 library. Lo and behold, only twelve are listed on the Sony website.
I now feel bad for knocking the Wii a bit, but not too much.
I can’t believe there are only twelve, and three are the same game (Elder Scrolls IV) and five are multiplatform with the Xbox 360.
Right now, I’m examining my gaming library, and of the next-gen consoles, I have more RPGs on the Xbox (the PlayStation 2 wins overall, but that’s not fair… it’s been around for a lot longer). Sure, the Xbox has been around for a year longer, but is that really that much of an excuse?
I love my Xbox and the games on it, but it was the PS2 that brought me back into the darkside of video games so my loyalty will always be with PlayStation. I would really like to see more exclusive RPGs to come to the PS3 in 2009. They lost Final Fantasy XIII rights, so they need to bust their butts and make sure they don’t lose any others.
Right now it’s looking like I’ll have to rest my RPG hopes with the Nintendo DS, and even though that makes things a lot more convenient for me, I’d still like to use my PS3 for things other than watching movies.

I agree wholeheartedly! I have only played Elder Scrolls Oblivion and Fallout 3 for PS3. I normally don’t play shooters, but with the game systems completely dominated by them and not alot to choose from in he way of rpg’s I was stuck with giving Fallout a try. I loved it. I went to PC gaming recently and I am playing games like Two Worlds and Elder Scrolls Marrowind,
Playstation needs to get their act together and redeem the new console for what it’s two predisesors had previously brought and what their customers had come to expect, RPG’s!
Seriously, they really dropped the ball on the ps3 in the RPG department. I suppose Sony was simply trying to match the plethora of shooters x360 had to offer by making some of their own. In doing so, though, they ended up alienating a large portion of their core fan base. Aside from the beautiful White Knight Chronicles, there really isnt’ much to look forward to in 2009 with FFXIII not coming out untill 2010. Perhaps a port of Star Ocean 4 on the PS3 in late 2009, or a even a port of Tales of Vesperia - but I doubt it.
I will say one thing, though. Although my thirst for a truly epic JRPG has not been fully quenched, I recently played Valkyria Chronicles and it is way, way up there on my list of best RPG’s. This is coming from someone who has been an avid RPG fan since Final Fantasy 1. The game brings two of my favorite RPG elements together, strategy and traditional style, to present a really new and refreshing experience. The battle system is just stunning. I have gone through the story 3 times already, and I’m still not tired of it. There is a lot - and I mean a lot- of story in this game, and it is presented in a very clean fashion. All in all it is the first RPG for the PS3 that has really pulled me in.
If you are like me(and I think you are), you will enjoy this game from beginning to end. Do yourself a favor and pick Valkyria Chronicles up, because trust me when I say that you don’t want to miss out on this gem of a game. It will not dissapoint.
I actually did download the demo to Valkyria Chronicles since it got such high reviews. I can see why so many people like it, but it just was not for me. I am horrible at aiming firearms, so I failed the tutorial over and over. Give me a giant sword over a rifle any day.
